Primeira entrevista de Jørgen Munkeby antes de vir ao Brasil disfarçado de black metal

Se existe alguma característica nas águas que banham a Noruega certamente é a mutação. Do pop A-ha ao ríspido Darkthrone, do delicioso eletrônico do Röyksopp ao jazz lisérgico e intricado do Elephant9, ou mesmo os “montanhosos” Nils Petter e Mari Boine, temos tamanha variação que nos impede qualquer conclusão acerca da qualidade da música oriunda daquele país.

Como se não bastasse, desde o desfecho da década de 90 temos um grupo que possui o mesmo DNA sônico, mas que não se enquadra em nenhuma das categorias acima citadas: Shining.

Prova disso é o talento natural do único constante no grupo, o multi-instrumentista e líder Jørgen Munkeby de mudar sua estética musical – jazz, synthpop, heavy metal, emo, industrial, etc – e ainda manter o alto nível das composições, sejam elas quais forem. E é sobre isso e muito mais que o próprio nos revelou com exclusividade! Confira.

Gostaria de começar com uma pergunta básica, mas necessária. O que te levou, ainda novo, a tocar profissionalmente? Sua primeira banda foi mesmo o Jaga Jazzist?

Jørgen Munkeby: Minha primeira banda se chamava Neon. Tocávamos jazz-rock-fusion, e eu toquei principalmente sax alto e um pouco de guitarra. Gravamos uma fita demo, mas acabou aí. Aos 15 anos entrei para o Jaga Jazzist, então essa foi minha primeira banda que se tornaria profissional. Shining começou em 1999.

Não sei ao certo o que me levou a tocar música profissionalmente. Mas eu sempre amei tocar e, mais ainda, adorava praticar e aprender coisas novas e me tornar melhor. Então é isso que eu tenho feito. E deu certo, pois nunca tive outro emprego além de ser músico!

O novo single “Wolves” está fantástico e mostra a banda revigorada mais uma vez. Como está a receptividade do público até agora?

Jørgen Munkeby: Na verdade, os fãs foram surpreendentemente positivos! Quando lançamos Animal em outubro de 2018, a nova direção musical chocou muita gente. Eu acho que algumas pessoas pensaram que talvez o Shining seria apenas uma banda estática fazendo a mesma música várias vezes depois do [álbum] Blackjazz em 2010. Embora qualquer um que tenha acompanhado a banda sabe que sempre mudamos nossa música e sempre foi uma banda surpreendente desejando explorar novos territórios musicais, Animal ainda causou bastante drama entre nossos fãs e no mundo da música. Mas depois de um ano, parece que a maioria das pessoas mudou de ideia e Animal é agora o nosso álbum mais popular de todos os tempos.

Agora eu não sabia o que esperar quando lançamos Wolves, mas, quando saiu, fiquei agradavelmente surpreendido com a quantidade de reações positivas que vimos. Então, apesar de tudo, foi um grande sucesso!

Com este lançamento parece que o Shining se tornou uma caixa de surpresas. O que esperar do próximo disco?

Jørgen Munkeby: Na verdade, eu não me conheço! Estou trabalhando nas músicas agora, mas ainda é cedo para dizer exatamente para onde iremos. Então vamos ver! Mas o certo é que faremos o que achamos certo e o que é emocionante para nós.

O que você escutava na época do álbum Sweet Shanghai Devil e o que ouve nos dias de hoje? O jazz ainda te influencia?

Jørgen Munkeby: Durante a produção do Sweet Shanghai Devil, minhas influências do jazz passaram de John Coltrane dos anos 60 para o jazz um pouco mais moderno. Wayne Shorter foi uma influência, assim como George Garzone com seu álbum The Fringe In New York. Também temos um pouco de influências clássicas contemporâneas, especialmente no piano. Isso foi retirado do Vingt Regards Sur l’Enfant Jesus de Olivier Messiaen.

Uma característica marcante na banda independente do estilo musical que tocam é a sonoridade extrema, incluindo seus vocais. Isso é algo seu ou do noruegueses em geral?

Jørgen Munkeby: Obrigado! Eu concordo que os sons extremos sempre fizeram parte do Shining. Como sou o único que sempre esteve na banda e todos os outros integrantes foram trocados pelo menos algumas vezes, acho que isso significa que essa coisa em particular vem de mim.

Uma coisa que muitos não sabem é que você também toca teclado no Emperor. Como surgiu o convite para se juntar à banda? 

Jørgen Munkeby: Foi Vegard (também conhecido como Ihsahn) quem me pediu para ingressar cerca de dois anos atrás. Fiquei mais do que feliz em participar, e fizemos muitos ótimos shows desde então. Adoro tocar com o Emperor!

Você é fã de black metal? Como você enxerga aquele período efervescente de bandas surgindo e toda aquelas polêmicas envolvendo assassinatos e queimas de igrejas?

Jørgen Munkeby: Quando eu era criança, ouvia muito metal, mas na época não gostava de black metal. Mas desde que trabalhei com o Enslaved em 2007 e com Ihsahn em 2009, ouvi muito black metal e comecei a entender e gostar. Eu realmente gosto da singularidade do gênero musical, e é ótimo poder aprender como tudo aconteceu!

Assassinar pessoas não é legal. E os assassinatos na cena norueguesa do black metal foram simplesmente estúpidos.

A queima das igrejas também foi um pouco estúpida, mas o simbolismo dos incêndios foi importante. Tudo isso aconteceu no aniversário de mil anos, quando o cristianismo foi imposto ao povo norueguês com violência e assassinato. Além disso, nossos símbolos nórdicos foram apropriados pelos nazistas durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Na década de 90, as pessoas sentiram que era importante recuperar nossa ancestralidade, e trabalharam duro para tirar o cristianismo da Noruega e começaram a usar velhos símbolos viking novamente.

Pessoalmente, eu cresci em uma família que não era religiosa – ou realmente anti-religiosa. Portanto, nunca senti a necessidade de lutar contra o cristianismo, pois isso nunca fez parte da minha vida. Provavelmente também é por isso que eu não me importava tanto com o black metal quanto com o Slayer quando criança. Mas eu gosto agora.

Ano que vem será a primeira visita do Emperor no Brasil. Como estão as suas expectativas e a da banda em geral?

Jørgen Munkeby: Estou super feliz por ir ao Brasil com o Emperor em 2020! Eu nunca estive aí, então mal posso esperar. Tudo o que sei sobre o Brasil é o Ju Jitsu brasileiro e a família Gracie. Treinei muito Ju Jitsu e MMA quando era mais novo.

Todo o Emperor está ansioso por toda a turnê sul-americana! Vai ser demais!

Alguma chance de você vir também com o Shining em alguma turnê?

Jørgen Munkeby: Espero que sim!

E o Me and That Man? Como conseguiu tempo para mais esse projeto com Nergal, do Behemoth?

Jørgen Munkeby: Bem, não tenho muito tempo, mas eu realmente queria fazer esse projeto com Nergal, então tive que adiar outras coisas para ter tempo para trabalhar na faixa “Run With The Devil” e, eventualmente, no vídeo. E estou feliz que sim! Porque eu amei como ficou!

Para finalizar, gostaria que listasse 3 discos que sempre estarão contigo e 1 que você jogaria no lixo. 

Jørgen Munkeby: Três que provavelmente ouvirei pelo resto da minha vida:

Um álbum que eu nunca ouvi (mas que amei quando criança):

– Na verdade, o primeiro CD que comprei é um CD que nunca escuto agora. Não quero dizer que banda é, porque não gosto de negatividade.

Interview: A box full of surprises called Shining

If there is one musical feature in the waters around Norway, it certainly is mutation. From A-ha’s pop to the harsh Darkthrone, from Röyksopp’s delightful electronic to Elephant9’s lysergic and intricate jazz or even the “mountainey” Nils Petter and Mari Boine, we have so such variation, we just can’t draw any conclusions about the quality of music from that country.

As if that were not enough, since the end of the 90’s we have a group that has the same sonic DNA, but that does not fit into any of the above mentioned categories: Shining.

Proof of this is the natural talent of the only constant member of the group, the multi-instrumentalist and leader Jørgen Munkeby to change their musical aesthetics – jazz, synthpop, heavy metal, emo, industrial, etc. – and still maintain the high level of compositions, whatever they are. And that’s about it and much more that he has exclusively talked to us! Check out.

I would like to begin with a very basic question, probably something you’ve heard a thousand times, but I do need to ask. What led you to professional music playing? Was Jaga Jazzist your first band?

Jørgen Munkeby: My first band was a band called Neon. We played jazz-rock-fusion, and I played mostly alto sax and a bit guitar. We recorded a demo tape, but it ended there. At age 15 I joined Jaga Jazzist, so that was my first band that would become professional. Shining startet in 1999.

I’m not sure what led me to playing music professionally. But I always loved playing, and even more so loved practicing and learning new things and becoming better. So that’s just what I’ve been doing. And it’s worked out, as I’ve never had another job than being a musician!

The new single Wolves is absolutely fantastic and it shows a renewed band. How are your fans taking the new material so far?

Jørgen Munkeby: Actually the fans have been surprisingly positive! When we released Animal back in October 2018 the new musical direction came as quite a shock to a lot of people. I guess some people thought that maybe Shining would just be a static band doing the same music again and again after Blackjazz in 2010. Although anyone who has followed the band knows that we’ve always changed our music and has always been a surprising band wanting to explore new musical territories, still Animal created quite a bit of drama among our fans and in the music business. But after one year it seems most people have turned around and Animal is now our most popular album ever.

I did not now what to expect when we released Wolves, but when it came out I was pleasantly surprised by how much positive reactions we saw. So all in all it’s been a great success!

After this new new release, it feels that Shining is a band full of “surprises.” What should we expect from the new record?

Jørgen Munkeby: Ehh, I actually don’t know myself! I’m working on the music now, but it’s still too early to say exactly where we will go. So let’s see! But what’s for sure is that we’ll just do what we feel is right and what is exciting for us.

What were you listening during the production of the album “Sweet Shanghai Devil,” and what are you listening to today? Is jazz still influencing you?

Jørgen Munkeby: During the making of Sweet Shanghai Devil my jazz influences had turned from 60’s John Coltrane and more towards a little bit more modern jazz. Wayne Shorter was an influence, and so was George Garzone with his album The Fringe In New York. We also have a bit of contemporary classical influences, especially in the piano stuff. This was taken from Olivier Messiaen’s Vingt Regards Sur l’Enfant Jesus.

No matter what the band is playing, the extreme sound (including vocals) is a very strong quality. Is this something that you bring to the band or is it a common thing between your bandmates, or even between the Norwegian people?

Jørgen Munkeby: Thanks! I agree that the extreme sounds have always been a part of Shining. Since I’m the only one that has always been in the band, and everyone else has been switched out at least a few times, I guess that means that this particular thing comes from me.

A lot of people does not know you play keyboard on Emperor. Who invited you to join the band?

Jørgen Munkeby: It was Vegard (aka. Ihsahn) who asked me to join about two years ago. I was more than happy to join, and we’ve played a lot of great shows since them. I love playing with Emperor!

Are you a black metal fan? How do you see the heydays of the style involving the polemic murders and the church burning?

Jørgen Munkeby: When I was a kid I listened a lot to metal, but I didn’t like black metal at that time. But since working with Enslaved in 2007 and Ihsahn in 2009 I’ve listened a lot to black metal and I started understanding it and liking it. I really like the uniqueness of the musical genre, and it’s great to have been able to learn how it all came about!

Murdering people is not ok. And the murders in the Norwegian black metal scene were just stupid.

The burning of the churches was also a bit stupid, but the symbolism of the church burnings were important. This all came about at the 1000 years anniversary of when Christianity was forced upon the Norwegian people with violence and murder. In addition our nordic symbols had been appropriated by the nazis during WW2. In the 1990’s people felt it was important to take back our ancestry, and they worked hard at getting Christianity out of Norway and they started using old viking symbols again.Personally I grew up in a family that was not religious — or actually anti-religious. So I never felt the need to fight against Christianity, as it was never a part of my life. That’s also probably why I didn’t care about either black metal or Slayer when I was a kid. But I do like it now.

Emperor is coming for the first time to Brazil in 2020. How are you expectations for the tour and how is the band feeling about this?

Jørgen Munkeby: I’m super stoked to be coming to Brazil with Emperor in 2020! I’ve never been there myself, so I can’t wait. All I know about Brazil is Brazilian Ju Jitsu and the Gracie family. I trained a loooot of Ju Jitsu and MMA when I was young.

The whole Emperor band is very much looking forward to the whole South American tour! It’s going to be awesome!

Is there any chance that Shining will play in Brazil sometime soon?

Jørgen Munkeby: I hope so!

What about Me and That Man? How did you get time for this project with Nergal?

Jørgen Munkeby: Well, I don’t have a lot of time, but I really wanted to do this project with Nergal so I just had to postpone other things to have time to work on the “Run With The Devil” track and eventually the video. And I’m glad I did! Because I looove how it turned out!

Now i’m curious about one thing: can you list three records that you will listen to for the rest of your life and one that you would throw in the trash can?

Jørgen Munkeby: Three that I will probably listen to for the rest of my life:

– John Coltrane: Crescent
– Nine Inch Nails: With Teeth
– Muse: The Resistance

One album that I never listen to (but that I loved when I was a kid):
– Actually the first CD I every bought is a CD I never listen to now. I don’t want to say what band it is, because I don’t like negativity.
