Nesse tempo, muitos artistas se viram obrigados a cancelarem shows e longas turnês.

Tina no olho do furacão (Foto: Zdepe)

Discos do Ohridski Trubaduri, Hüsker Dü, Fugazi, Azra… sempre estarão no meu coração.

Mais uma vez muito obrigado! Fiquem à vontade para considerações finais. O espaço é de vocês.

Vasko Atanasoski: Caro Luiz.

Bernays Propaganda in the age of isolated relationships: an interview

Music, the indie scene, politics, football, coronavirus; more music. And other subjects which this interview just cannot bear; as an outcome of various emails, social media interaction and video with the coolest Macedonian song master Vasco Atanasoski, one of the brains behind Bernays Propaganda.

With the partner in crime, the vocalist Tina G. known for expressing her emotions through all forms of art, you name it.

Below, a glimpse of the chat with the two great Macedonian names of the Indie scene, as well as the alternative European musical scenario. Enjoy!

Hello how’s everything? First of all, I’d like to thank you for talking to us here at Class of Sounds and with Brazil. As far as I know, this is the first time a band from Macedonia speaks to this part of the world.

Vasko Atanasoski:  Luiz, I am happy and lucky from the very first time you contacted me and gave me opportunity for friendship. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving me opportunity to communicate with Brazil thru you and your awesome music platform Class of Sounds.

It’s my pleasure indeed! Alright, let’s get this interview started! What was on your mind when you founded Bernays Propaganda?

Vasko Atanasoski: In that summer of 2006 I didn’t have nothing on mind since I didn’t really know where this band will lead me and I didn’t know if the band will survive more than a summer. So, it was intuition what was leading me. Every time since then I was suffering when I was just thinking and I was happy when I was just doin’ it.

Did all band members came from the punk scene? What motivated all of you to create something different?

Vasko Atanasoski:  Most (95%) of the Bernays Propaganda’s band members came from diy/hardcore/punk scene. My motivation was status quo of the mid 2000’s local and global HC scene. And here we are, 14 years later playing music bit more different from our origins, but always having same or similar attitude we had from our very first beginnings.

Bernays Propaganda in creative process (Promo shoot)

Vtora mladost, treta svetska vojna (2nd Youth, 3rd World War) is a fantastic album. Maybe the best moment of Bernays Propaganda as a consistently creative band. Where did so much inspiration came from?

Tina Gorovska: It comes from a lack of trust that “the good” are majority, it’s a search for that “flower in the desert”! it’s really hard to find truly independent wo/man in this country, seems that almost everyone is a member of the two political parties that fucked up our lives in the past 30 years. This slavery matrix really frustrates! So, the album is a bittersweet soundtrack of the private war held in the heart of a man or a woman who imported the Third World War at home, with the closest and dearest family, instead of using the energy for fighting outside with the real enemy.

We forgot to trust in good things, we see, comment and observe them on social media from a distance, but we don’t produce them enough. Everything is turned upside-down…We cook food and first we take instagram photo, then we eat. Instead of going out and smelling the nature, we ask the almighty modern God: Google, how does the lavender flower smell? We live indirect life with imported goals  – which are not coming direct from the heart –  getting married because we must, spending more time with colleagues than with loved ones, have constant tantrums cause someone told us that we have to be the best, the fastest, the strongest… The Sun rises and the Sun sets, but we like to complicate in between and surround ourselves with things we don’t need. Who needs all that clothes, cars, shoes, cosmetics? Now we realized that the list of the basics is not what the capitalism told us, but the list is very simple and short:  fresh air, food, shelter, love. And freedom. Before the “covid19” quarantine cage, we chose to live 60% of the time on internet with the smartphone in our hands, ignoring our loved ones, and now we got 100% virtual prison, so we cry for physical contact, movement, the freedom we lost, but as long as we live in cannibalism (capitalism) were we and will we be ever free?

How are your fans reacting to the new material?

Tina Gorovska: I think that most of the people who are listening our music are appreciating the constant changes and experimenting we do with the sound, especially on the last album. I don’t know if we can always call these changes  – growth, but it’s for sure natural habitat which is stronger than our conscience . Also we are aware of the fact that we lost many of the local fans for sure with the last album,that\s a risk we are willing to take, because we were honest. It’s better like that, than being hypocritical. Its like losing a fake friend.  Being blind when you have two functional eyes, is also not cool.

The world is heading to one more month of a widespread pandemic crisis of Covid-19. During this period, artists had to cancel concerts and tours. How is this affecting Bernays Propaganda?

Tina Gorovska: I’m trying to be optimist, but the reality punches in the face. It fucked up our tour and future, for sure! We’ll have to deal with the consequences the best we can. When we named the album Third world war, we didn’t think that it will be prophetic and it will really happened like this. The only good thing in this mess is that the corona quarantine proved the need from art, suddenly everyone has need to watch so many movies, reading books, listening music to comfort the pain in the lockdown. Seems that there is essential need for music (art in general), cause its the best comfort in these difficult times. Better than drugs and alchoholJ How the concerts, tours and public gatherings will continue in future, who knows?! We will have to wait and see. Maybe the “business” part of the music industry will stop for a while, but they can never stop the “creative” part. Many songs will be made in this modern prison and many books will be written.

What political issues from your country inspire and influence the band’s lyrics? Did Macedonia also embarked on this recent wave of political polarization that’s been seen around the world?

Tina Gorovska: On the question: “what did you read today?”- 80% of the people will answer: I’ve read the package of the cheese in the supermarket – 1000 calories, chocolate box– excellent literature, 70% pure cocoa, I ‘ve read the dictate of my political herd, I’ve read 53 memes, 43 headlines, scrolled all the facebook, twitter timelines, actually I saw so many photos on Instagram, that I forgot to read! At least the important stuff. What are we doing when we have approach to all the informations? we are  doing nothing with that beautiful potential in our hands. Our days are trapped with trivia news. Lets watch the newest TV series on a Netflix, lets dive in mediocre entertainment, waste all the time that could have been productive and creative, let’s substitute the priceless with the pointless,  doctors with minimal wage and starlets and football players with maximum, let’s follow the pattern of power and give the vote for the assholes from the two political parties with different (right/left) costumes that produce the same script – only1000 people live a good life in Macedonia, the other 2 million are just scratching the surface. So the only polarization that was always present beneath the layers of ideologies or national, ethnical branding, was the class distinction of rich & poor, and it’s still is.  Ideology was never among the political elites, but among the people from the bottom. Even the mosquitos and the sheeps knows, but then why do we constantly reproducing the same scheme that makes us unhappy. Maybe because deep in the heart, secretly or publicly, the oppressed wants to became the oppressor?

Vasko A. and Tina G. (Promo Shoot)

Vasko, your side project, 21 vek, just released a new album. What made you put together a new band?

Vasko Atanasoski: Everything started with hanging out in Studio 1060 with Deni Krstev and Rade Jordanovski. Step by step, day by day it was clear that we’ve become band which creates songs really fast. That’s why we’ve released 2 albums in less than 2 years.

When listening to 21 vek, and even Vtora mladost, treta svetska vojna, I noticed some musical nuances that remind me of brazillian rock bands from the 80s and 90s. Is there in fact any influence? Or is it just coincidence?

Vasko Atanasoski: I love a lot of Brazilian hard core/punk bands like Discarga, I shot Cyrus, Mukeka di Rato…but my biggest influence is Tom Ze. I consider Brasil ( and all other south American) countries as very close.

Talking about Brazilian connections, you released a single with the sample of “Dor e Dor” by Tom Zé. In previous interviews, you mentioned he played in Macedonia circa 1983. Were you there? How was that? In Brazil he is associated with the artistic / political movement called Tropicalismo, but his works are better known in other countries.

Vasko Atanasoski: There is a story that Tom Ze came here somewhere in period between 1983 and 1987. Tropicalismo is very respected here by some people. I love the sound and attitude of Tom Zé.

By the way, you name resembles the name of a very big football team here in Brazil, but they haven’t done very well in the past years, Vasco da Gama. You are very hooked on football, is that right?

Vasko Atanasoski:  Yes, I love football and I support local team FK Vardar since I was the kid. I also love Brazilian football. First player I ever heard of was Zico.I also love the passion of Brazilian Torcidas.

Vasko Atanasoski (Promo Shoot)

Tina, besides your diversity, your voice is also one fo the key points to Bernays Propaganda. What has influenced you as a singer? And when did you find out you wanted to sing professionally?

Tina Gorovska: I’m actually the biggest amateur in the band, most of the time I didn’t even had proper equipment and a microphone. I don’t know am I professional or not, I know that I wanted to sing and write lyrics, stories from the bottom of my being, to express freely and honestly without a limit, my thoughts and feelings, which was not always easy for a introvert closed “shell” person like me. When I started the musical independent scene was mostly a “boys club” and I thought that as a woman its important to tell my side of the story. But on the end it’s all about making a good thing out of bad thing, making a beautiful song out of despair and sadness, and making people feel hope while they are listening to your music, that’s a real blessing and joy.

The art displayed in the videos produced by the band, including the Dadaism aesthetic, is remarkable. How do these ideas come to the surface?

Tina Gorovska: The few videos that we have are result of pure enthusiasm and talent of the director Milan Blazevski and one is made by Bojan Krtolica. The last one I made and its just a unserious home video, it was a way to survive through creativity and not to go mad in this self-isolation days. The main point of the Dadaism was collage of reality – everything exists in the world, its all a matter of smart and sincere choice.
Selecting something that already exists in reality and combine it on your own way, giving it a new meaning.

And how are the indie and post-punk music scenes at Skopje and Macedonia in general? Is there any media coverage at all, or it’s just for established, bigger artists?

Vasko Atanasoski: Macedonia is a small country with a small scenes but definitely there was always good artists here. There is no media coverage of that sound here, it’s all just few blogs and one indie radio.

Sold out concert before the pandemic (Credits: Zedepe)

Would you name which macedonian bands are composing material you like?

Vasko Atanasoski:  It’s best if you can check labels like Sharla, Kritika.mk, Ako nikoj ne sviri, Kran…you will find some very interesting and beautiful music there.

Finally,I am curious about one thing: can you list three records that you will listen to for the rest of your lives and one that you would throw in the trash can?

Vasko Atanasoski:  I don’t like the records that I will throw in trash, but there is a lot a always bring with me. Records from Ohridski Trubaduri, Husker Du, Fugazi, Azra…will always be in my heart.

Once again thank you very much! Feel free to state your final considerations, the room is yours.

Vasko Atanasoski:  Dear Luiz. I am so happy we become friends and thanx so much for giving us opportunity to say some words about us to Brazilian public. Hope one day we will tour Brazil and you’ll visit us here in Macedonia.
